Verwood-Past and Present
Verwood has changed dramatically over the past few decades and has grown from a widespread series of tiny hamlets to what is reputed to be Europe’s fastest growing town and even now has been earmarked for further expansion in the future. Using extracts and original photographs from Jill Coulthard’s excellent book “Verwood Village to Town” together with recent photographs from locations as close as possible to the original, these articles will give you an idea of how Verwood has changed.
The example right shows how dramatic the transformation has been with the bustling Railway Station photographed in 1964 swept away – a victim of the Beeching cuts, to be replacerd in later years by a housing development. The adjacent colour photo shows how even the road has been completely re-aligned leaving the station site today almost unrecognisable. All text and photos are copyright.
