Roundabout East Dorset Villages April 2018

Dear readers,

In this issue we seem to have lots of articles about animals in some form or other starting with a short history of Ferndown’s Zoo on page 6 which opened back in 1947 and unsurprisingly closed around 8 years later! It housed all kinds of exotic animals and reptiles – some of which escaped!

Then we have a history of man’s best friend on page 20 plus a rather appealing dog called Toby who is looking for a forever home in our usual Waggy Tails section page 18.

Page 26 features Blashford Lakes which is always a good spot to see all sorts of different animals including birds, butterflies, reptiles, insects, mammals etc. Especially at this time of year when many species are arriving ready for the summer season.

The History of bees is one of our books reviewed on page 35 although it’s described as ‘Dystopian Fiction’ so it’s a rather tenuous link I think!

And finally if you are lucky you may spot the Gruffalo at Moors Valley Country Park whilst exploring the new giant 5m high Hawkhouse with its 18m wingspan on the playtrail which also features all sorts of other animal sculptures.

For many more local events and activities around the local countryside check out our What’s On pages 22 and 24 or our website.
