Roundabout East Dorset Villages August 2018

Dear readers,

This issue’s cover features the ‘Dorset Dragon’ or Durdle Door as it is more commonly known! One of the most iconic features of the Jurassic Coast and one of my favourite locations for a scenic cliff walk as no doubt it is for many of our readers! I had never heard of this nickname until recently but it’s very easy to see why if you look carefully – like a dragon petrified by some ancient Dorset spell and no doubt the story lost in the mists of time!

Not to be outdone by Dorset folklore we also have The Bisterne Dragon in the New Forest of course!

If like me you are also a big fan of English folklore and traditions then page 2 tells us about the surprisingly long established and ancient British tradition of well-dressing or well-flowering! I have never heard of it I must admit and had to Google it to find out more after reading the article! Seems it’s big in the Midlands though.

There are many more local events happening all around your local area like the popular Bisterne Scarecrow Festival for instance during August and September, so check out our What’s On pages 22 & 24 and our website for more details. Hopefully the sunshine lasts just a bit longer during the school holidays!

If you would like more members in your club or society, and/or would like us to publish your news, articles or future events, then simply e-mail the details to: info@roundaboutmags.co.uk.
