Roundabout East Dorset Villages December 2019

Dear readers,

This issue’s front cover photo was chosen as it reminded me that a couple of years ago we attended the annual ‘From darkness to light’ Christmas Services at Salisbury Cathedral which had always been on our list of Traditional things to do at Christmas! It was just so beautiful and atmospheric especially as it was set in one of England’s finest churches. The perfect traditional way to start the festive season.

We all have different traditional ways of celebrating Christmas no doubt and another very popular one is going to one of the many Pantos at this time of year – especially with children or grandchildren! On page 6 we have a history of this most peculiar of British traditions! One where cross dressing was de riguer since it was actually illegal for women to act in theatres before 1660. Fortunately the tradition of men dressed as Widow Twanky or the Ugly Sisters is still maintained which all adds to the fun and quirkiness!

Our article on Traditional Christmas style can be found on page 26 describing some of the simple ways you can achieve a warm and welcoming look that is easy to achieve and doesn’t cost the earth!

We also have festive themed puzzles and the all important Last Posting Dates on page 31.

So if you want to treat a loved one this Christmas AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 34!

Finally my team and I would like to wish all our readers and advertisers old and new the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and the New Year.
