Roundabout East Dorset Villages June 2018

Dear readers,

No doubt you recognised the painting of Corfe Castle on this issue’s front cover. The castle was part of a gift of £30million bequeathed to the National Trust in 1982 and at the time was the largest the Trust had ever received. The whole estate included 16,000 acres of farmland, an elegant 17th-century mansion containing one of the country’s finest private art collections and the ruins of Corfe Castle, a historic fortress near the English Channel, parts of which are at least 900 years old. Not bad for an organisation which started in 1931 with just over 4 acres in Cardigan Bay, Wales and a vision “To provide open-air sitting rooms for the poor’’!

If you haven’t guessed already, the estate was Kingston Lacy near Wimborne.

We have often explored the gardens and snowdrop event at Kingston Lacy, but never the actual house. So we recently spent a fascinating day exploring the house itself – with the aid of very knowledgeable guides of course! The 2nd floor tented bedrooms are definitely OTT, but then so was the owner at the time of course! Thoroughly recommended!
