Dear readers

This issue’s cover photo was taken early one morning in May and features the Airbus that you may have seen regularly delivering NHS equipment from around the world to us via Bournemouth and other UK airports. The aircraft has been cleverly registered as 9H-EAL which is a nice link to its current use. There is also a similar aircraft registered as 9H-NHS!

As you are probably aware we are keen cyclists (my husband mainly!) so to be honest apart from not being able to play tennis, lockdown has given us lots more opportunities for more cycling instead.

And also to experience something strange in the Forest that we rarely hear. Gone was that relentless almost permanent background hum of traffic from the A31, A35 and A338 to be replaced by absolute peace and birdsong – lots of it! Distant cuckoo calls could be heard every time we ventured out and the normally shy deer seemed to find lone cyclists not at all intimidating!

In fact at the beginning of lockdown the Forest was as if it had become a new concept of a National Park for walkers and cyclists only! Now there’s a thought! (Although not if that has to include those awful gung-ho lycra clad sportive riders who might just as well stay at home in their garage on turbo trainers as it must be impossible to enjoy the Forest en masse!)

But lockdown is gradually being eased as I write and it will really be great to finally give our families and close friends a hug very soon, although what the new ‘normal’ will be remains to be seen!
