Pedal Car Grand Prix 2012

Sunday 15th July 2012

Celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

Pedal-Car-Grand-Prix-June-2012-pic-1Exciting news, as demand for the team entries for the whacky style pedal car race held in Ringwood grows rapidly; we are nearly up to the maximum of 72 pedal cars racing this year and have created two races to fit them all in – the results will be merged together to give over-all winners.

The Ringwood Brewery British Pedal Car Grand Prix will follow the traditional race course of 0.9 KM with the start line at the Market Place, then down the High Street and up Southampton Road taking a sharp left hand corner at Blockbusters, powering up the bus lane into Meeting House Lane back into the Market place.

There are so many NEW team enquiries from local groups, retailers, charities and even emergency services and so to avoid disappointing many potential teams we have increased the maximum teams to 72 from 54 as in the 2010 GP.

So, 2 sets of 36 Pedal Cars will line the starting grids, first race starting at 11:15am and the second at 2:15pm. Highly competitive racing is expected from the top Pedal Car racing teams such as the Great Central Racing,  Team Royce, Gone Biking Mad, 2006 winners Patterson’s Bangers and the “Fun Riders” with brilliant team livery to fancy dress.

Grid positions are drawn in the style of a completely random lottery by the Race Day Director! The keen eared by-stander will hear the teams hatching their plans for gaining the most places on the first lap so that they are quickly on the heels of their rivals.

Pit stop change overs and numerous running repairs are slicker than those of Formula One racing.

The Champagne podium celebrations will take place in the Market Place where the proud winners will be presented with the winner’s Trophy and with the added bonus for the male participants having their photographs taken with the “pit babes”!

Both BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and Satellite TV have filmed these “wacky races” with radio and media supporting the coverage of this biennial spectacle which now attracts entrants from BBC, Wave 105.2FM, The Bournemouth Echo” and many more.

Teams consist of up to four drivers per car and one pit pusher. There are classes for juniors (under 16’s) and for ladies and overall Winners.

The 0.9 kilometre circuit is flat out for most of the way with just a few corners of note and overtaking with three abreast in the fastest sections. The opposition is absolutely first class with teams joining from hundreds of miles away.

The judging of the Concours D’ Elegance is held on the Saturday before the race in Ringwood so that members of the public can come along and get a sneak preview of the competing cars and also witness practice sprints on the roads.

Race Day; The pedal cars assemble in the Furlong Centre from 8.00am and are displayed there for the morning, prior to the parade laps: 10.45am for race one and 1.45pm for race two.

Spectators are able to walk around the whole course to watch the race from various different vantage points. The whole emphasis of the event is to have FUN! The pedal cars vary greatly in design with some very light and aerodynamic competitive cars, whilst others are built to amuse the crowds. The teams have their own pits and are allowed to change riders at the pit stops as many times as they like, which makes pit lane viewing very interesting for the spectators!

The chequered flag is waved at the winning cars at 1.15pm and 4.15pm

Finally the Champagne Spraying Trophy Presentations are held on the podium rostrum at 4.20pm.

The event also raises sponsorship money that is then donated to selected charities: South Coast Cancer Research, a charitable organisation committed to the control of cancer through quality research, prevention/education, counselling and patient care.
